Admission Defer and Withdrawal Policy

effective 8/26/2025; updated 9/17/2025

Deferral of Admission

Pitzer College understands that students may encounter circumstances that require postponing their enrollment beyond our Gap Year request deadline. To support students in these situations, the following deferral guidelines apply:

Eligibility
  1. Deferral requests are considered only for first-year students who have submitted their enrollment deposit by the stated commitment deadline.
  2. Transfer students are not typically eligible for deferral but may reapply in a future admission cycle.
Deferral Period
  1. Deferrals are granted for one academic year only (e.g., from Fall 2025 to Fall 2026). Requests beyond one year will require a new application for admission.
Process
  1. Students must submit a written request for deferral by June 1 of their entry year. Requests will not be granted beyond new student orientation.
  2. Requests should include a brief explanation of the reason for deferral and intended plans during their time away.
  3. Approval of deferrals is at the discretion of the Admission Office.
  4. If a deferral is not granted then a student can be withdrawn and is welcome to re-apply for admission to Pitzer College.
Conditions of Approved Deferrals
  1. During the deferral period, students may not enroll full-time in another degree-granting program.
  2. The admission office will reach out in early Spring, typically in January, and students must confirm their intention to enroll in the coming Fall semester.
  3. Any changes to a student’s academic or disciplinary status during the deferral period must be disclosed to the Admission Office and may impact their admission and enrollment decision.

Withdrawal of Admission

Pitzer College recognizes that circumstances may arise where a student chooses not to enroll after accepting admission.

Voluntary Withdrawal
  1. Students who decide not to enroll should notify the Admission Office in writing as soon as possible.
  2. Enrollment deposits are non-refundable after the stated commitment deadline (May 1 for first-year students).
College-Initiated Withdrawal

The College reserves the right to withdraw an offer of admission if:

  • Final high school or college transcripts reflect a significant decline in academic performance.
  • The Office of Admission has not heard from the admitted student, and we are beyond the enrollment deposit or a granted extension deadline.
  • A student fails to meet admission or enrollment requirements.
  • A student does not show up for orientation without communicating to the Office of Admission, the Office of Financial Aid, or the Registrar.
  • Information comes to light that would have impacted the admission decision, including disciplinary action or misrepresentation in the application.
Reapplication
  1. Students who withdraw or whose admission is rescinded may reapply in a future admission cycle. Their application will be considered in the context of the new applicant pool.
