EA 109 PZ -Urban Environmental Planning Solutions Institution: Pitzer College
Description: Environmental racism is pervasive in the United States and across the globe. The world?s most vulnerable populations consistently suffer from persistent overexposure to environmental pollutants. Consider Hurricane Katrina, the Flint Water Crisis in the US, disproportionate hazardous waste distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa, and refuse waste in China. This course will analyze unjust environmental case studies around the world. Students will solve real world environmental problems by applying environmental justice theory, principles and practice to contemporary environmental problems. During this interactive seminar course, students will engage with political actors, community activists and grass roots organizations to address environmental problems. Students will learn how environmental policy is constructed and implemented. Upon completion of the course, students will write environmental justice regulations such as a California General Plan environmental justice element.
This course promotes intercultural understanding, social justice, and social responsibility.
