Earth, Fire, Water: Exploring Connections through Clay

This course will address ecological interdependence through the creation of a collaborative artwork. This ecological investigation will begin with the geography and geology of the Pitzer campus. An interdisciplinary group of students will be led through collaborative research to learn how the Pitzer campus is connected to other earth and water bodies via natural systems, including underground waterways, runoff and migratory patterns. We will conduct academic and field work in these places of connection, including learning about wild clay and gathering organic materials for inclusion in the resulting artwork. Ideally students will come from diverse disciplines including multiple visual arts, writing, architecture and the sciences (earth sciences, engineering, biology, etc).
