ENGL 015 PZ -Epic Worlds Institution: Pitzer
Description: If the epic is a literary form of the ancient world, why are epic narratives so prevalent today? We will explore how various global epics serve to develop and contest narratives of cultural identity and difference. Readings will include selections from Gilgamesh, the Indian epics, the Homeric epics, Journey to the West, Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost, among other global epics. We will examine how epics are caught up in the culture wars and global nationalist politics, and the lure of modern epics such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, and the Marvel Universe.
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
