CHST 182 CH -Death Squads and Dictators

Institution: Pitzer

Description: Death Squads and Dictators: Latinx Literature and the Legacy of the Cold War

The Cold War was arguably the longest conflict in U.S. history, the defining event of the second half of the twentieth century. This course places this history, its discourses, and in particular the overlooked impact on Latin American and Latinx communities at the center of our investigation. We will examine government interventions into the countries of the Latin America at the height of the Cold War and the legacy of those interventions on diasporic populations in the US, thereby emphasizing the complex ways in which twentieth century Latinx literature embodies the cultural realities of U.S. domestic containment, xenophobia, and surveillance that marked the Atomic age.

Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
