LGCS 166 PZ -Topics in Sociolinguistics Institution: Pitzer
Description: Topics in Sociolinguistics: Language and gender in children’s films
This course will explore patterns of language variation in children’s films, particularly the Disney and Pixar films. We will look at the type of language that is associated with masculinity or femininity in these films, as well as how queerness is represented. How is language used to promote certain gender ideologies? Has any progress been made in these representations over time? And do media actually have any effect on children’s behavior? Students will conduct a sociolinguistic research project on language and ideologies about gender in children’s media.
Prerequisite(s): LGCS 010 PZ and a sociolinguistics class such as 112 or 116. Please also check the current course schedule for requirements.
