In this course we will examine contemporary humorist cultures of the Hispanophone world. By attending to different modes of comedy, such as but not limited to; film, stand-up, comics and skits, we will analyze, both, how discriminatory power structures in Hispanophone societies function, and how humor functions as a space where contestations and resistances take place. Through careful focus on comedic material, contextualized by relevant readings in cultural studies, literary and critical theory, we will re-examine what the term “Hispanic’ means, considering the varied expressive cultures that constitute this identifier beyond the Iberian Peninsula.
