This course provides a broad introduction to ethical theory in the Western philosophical tradition. By engaging with both historical and contemporary works of philosophy, students will study issues in the three main subfields of ethics: practical or applied ethics, normative ethical theory, and metaethics. Possible topics include: AI ethics, the permissibility of abortion, virtue theory, deontology, consequentialism, naturalism and non-naturalism, objectivism and subjectivism, and moral responsibility.
