Ancient(ish) Urbanisms: Urban traditions from ‘classical’ cultural contexts. This class introduces students to a range of urban contexts. These contexts are all moments of high culture in their respective histories, constituting classical moments in various cultural traditions. Students will learn about urbanism from historical contexts as early as ancient Mesopotamia and survey a range of urban traditions leading up to the present day and into the future. They will learn how disparate urban cultures produced their built environment and its instantiation of culture. They will also learn about the challenges these urban traditions faced, including changing ecological and technological conditions.
