Lives and Livelihoods in South Asia
This course will explore the diversity of lives, worldviews, and social relationships across South Asia through the lens of work and labor. Through case studies of entrepreneurial doctors, construction workers, taximen, bureaucrats, traders, farmers, domestic laborers, and more, we will trace how experiences of working life intersect with factors such as gender, class, geography, and climate. Through detailed ethnographic case studies, the course will give advanced students a deep understanding of anthropological approaches, insight into contemporary issues in Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and a theoretical overview of major themes in the study of work and economic life.
