ENGL 071A PZ -Contemporary Indigenous Poetry Institution: Pitzer
Description: TURTLE ISLAND/CEM Ä€NÃHUAC: Contemporary Poetry of Indigenous North America
This course is an introduction to reading poetry, and focuses on contemporary work by First Nations,
Native American, Pacific Islander, and Indigenous Latin American writers from across North
America. We approach “North America†as comprising three areas: Northern America (Canada and
the United States), Central America, and the Caribbean. Readings will include Jordan Abel,
Humberto Ak’abal, Natalie Diaz, Alan Pelaez Lopez, Craig Santos Perez, and Natalia Toledo, among
others. We discuss settler state models of reconciliation, as well as indigenous resistance to liberal
multiculturalism, inclusion, and redress. Ethics of sovereignty, autonomy, repatriation, and
incommensurability are posed as alternatives.
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
