SPAN 184 PZ -Rap en español Institution: Pitzer
Description: Rap en español (The World of Latin American Hip Hop)
Why is hip hop important in Latin America? How is rap in español bound up with the construction of minoritized identities and communities? What are the social functions of music and poetry? This course explores how artists from Cuba, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and the United States use hip hop to reimagine identity in relation to race, gender, protest, colonialism, and urban space. By analyzing rap songs and other expressions of hip hop culture, including graffiti and breakdance, you will develop a critical eye (and ear) for interpreting expressions of popular culture in the Global South
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
