SPAN 181 PZ -Music in Latin America Institution: Pitzer
Description: From samba and salsa to cumbia, merengue, and
reggaeton, popular music has been central in
shaping ideas about Latin America. This course
examines how music has been mobilized to reflect
racial and national identity. Through local and
hemispheric perspectives, we will explore some of the
most important genres of Latin American popular
music, from the post-independence period to the
present. Focusing on lyrics and rhythm, we will
approach the music on its own terms as well as
through representations in other media (novels,
short stories, poetry, and cinema). No previous
musical experience necessary!
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
