SPAN 159 PZ -Cuba, Culture & Revolution Institution: Pitzer
Description: The Cuban Revolution of 1959 sparked an embargo from the United States that continues
to this day. On the one hand, a “forbidden island,” on the other, Cuba continues to serve as
a source of fascination for US residents and an inspiration for countries in the Global
South. Long before the Revolution, the idea of Cuba as an exceptional nation was being
constructed culturally and politically. This course explores some of Cuba’s important
historical moments and political categories (slavery, nationalism, mestizaje, socialism, the
Special Period) and the cultural sites (music, literature, and film) that responded to and
shaped them.
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
