SPAN 136 PZ -Caribbean Popular Culture Institution: Pitzer
Description: This course will focus on analyzing Caribbean popular culture (mainly from the Spanish-Speaking
Caribbean) from a chronological perspective in order to consider how critical terms that inform the
critical analyses of literary, musical and performance cultures in the Caribbean region are shifting.
We will map these shifts from the working-class musical genres which acquired a national recognition
after been considered for decades as inferior culture. We will consider how the urban setting redefined the new Black subculture of drugs and marginality. The course will link reggaeton/raggadancehall with activism, and generally we will consider the issues of citizenship/ migration, and sexuality.
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
