SOC 072 PZ -Hidden: US & Soviet Colonialism Institution: Pitzer
Description: Hidden in Plain Sight: U.S. and Soviet Colonialism
This course examines the United States and the former Soviet Union through the lens of colonialism
and empire. While largely invisible to members of both societies and surprisingly also overlooked by
many social scientists, both the United States and the Soviet Union can readily be understood and
analyzed as versions of colonialism and/or empire. The course will highlight similarities and
differences between the two cases regarding a number of specific dimensions of colonial and
imperial social relations. Readings and sources will include perspectives from Ukraine, Kazahkstan,
and other former Soviet societies and American Indian nations and peoples
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
