POST 126 PZ -Iran, Islam & Poltics of Modrnty

Institution: Pitzer

Description: Iran, Islam, and the Politics of Modernity The title and inspiration for this course comes from Robin Wright’s book The Last Great Revolution. Wright argues that the 1979 Revolution in Iran completes the promise of the Modern Era, “launched in the West” but “adopted by or adapted to all other parts of the world.” This course will thus assess the possibilities, successes, and failures of the experience of “multiple modernities” in Iran and elsewhere. It will look critically at the value of the destination itself, asking whether modernity is a benign and righteous force or a temptation to produce havoc, and critically assessing whether the twin “pillars of modernity,” empowerment and universal equality, can be reconciled.

Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
