HIST 061 PZ -Global Environmental History Institution: Pitzer
Description: This course introduces students to a history of the ?Anthropocene,? an epoch defined by humans ?
ability to dramatically alter the planet on a geological scale. Investigating how people?s relationships to
the environment have changed over time, we will traverse the historical experience of human societies
from the earliest forms of settlement and agricultural cultivation to the extractive, fragile, and disaster-
prone 21st century. This course will focus on three primary themes: 1) development, or the idea that
humanity can improve upon nature, 2) security, or the freedom from untimely disaster, death, or
destruction, and 3) sustainability, or the ability of societies to survive within the ecological constraints
that structure all human experience.
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
