Description: Slavery and Freedom in the Black Atlantic:
Beginning in the fifteenth century and ending in the twentieth, this course examines the history of slavery in the Atlantic world and the complex shifts that led to its abolition. Ultimately, students will examine how slavery shaped African diasporic cultures in the Americas and the long-term effects of the slave trade on the African continent. Moreover, students will study how slavery shaped modern financial and political systems including capitalism, industrialism, and imperialism.
