Description: Aliens and Citizens: A Legal History of U.S. Immigration
Stories in the news about United States immigration focus on ?crisis journalism? that give us little or no
understanding of legal or historical contexts. How do people immigrate to the U.S.? What are the
mechanisms and policies that immigrants have to navigate? This class offers an introduction to the
laws, policies, and history of U.S. immigration as we examine the cultural narratives surrounding
immigration. Knowledge of how immigration works and some of the historical and legal ?backstories?
will empower us to understand our present-day crises. The class aims to provide students with an
informed perspective on this important national issue so we can imagine what U.S. immigration
policies of the future should be in the age of climate change
