ENGL 099 PZ -Desire & Love in Mod & Cont Lit Institution: Pitzer
Description: Desire and Love in Modern and Contemporary Literature
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways,†writes poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning. In this course, we follow Browning’s lead, examining the diverse representation of desire in modern and contemporary world literature and learning to identify how literature intersects productively with real historical, cultural, and social conditions. We’ll focus on three main areas: desire and romantic love; desire and otherness; and desire and power. Reading across borders and in translation, this course moves from love poetry, short stories, a play and a film adaptation, to graphic novels and fiction.
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
