ENGL 013 PZ -Sci Fiction in 19th C America Institution: Pitzer
Description: Science Fiction in 19th-Century America
Starting in the Jacksonian Era and ending in the early 20th century, ENGL013 explores how the technological changes of the 19th century (from the steam engine to early aviation) begat stories of wonder and terror that we now call ?science fiction.? In the process, we?ll discuss how science fiction often purports to depict a utopian or dystopian future, when in fact, it might be commenting (satirically) on the present. By comparing this course?s primary texts to contemporary science fiction works, finally, students will consider how the 19th-century works expressed concerns that continue to have relevance to American life today.
Prerequisite(s): See the current course schedule for registration restrictions.
