Description: This course concerns the horrific and the macabre in American literature,
starting with Charles Brockden Brown?s Edgar Huntly (1799) and ending with
Upton Sinclair?s The Jungle (1906). Along the way, we?ll survey the theoretical
underpinnings of the Gothic, and discuss how the American experience
informed hegemonic authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, while also considering
how authors such as Harriet Jacobs fought back against America?s horrors.
Race, sexuality, religion, science, and philosophy will figure in the discussion.
Together, we will explore why America remains a haunted nation.
