POST 118 PZ -The Criminlztn of Latns & Resist Institution: Pitzer
Description: The Criminalization of Latinos and Resistance
This course examines popular representations of Latinos in media and the social consequences of those representations. American films, television shows and print media are the primary ways citizens learn about politics, social issues and out-groups. Latino images and popular narratives profoundly impact how they are perceived and treated by out-groups. At best, Latinos are seen as an “invisible community” because of their underrepresentation in the media. Yet, when they are portrayed, the images and narratives tend to be narrow and negative. These representations have contributed to the criminalization and victimization of Latinos.
