Simon Schama has said, provocatively,”there is a difference between land, which is earth, and landscape, which signifies a kind of jurisdiction.” This course examines land and landscape, which have together become a diversely composite index of human life, a complex inscription on the earth of our civilization’s values. Students will be introduced to the literatures and iconography of land and landscape from the 15th century to the present.
