SOC 012 PZ -College Stdnt Life in TV & Film Institution: Pitzer
Description: The editors of Cinematic Sociology, discuss the sociological perspectives of
film, asking ?how can film be used by sociologists to better understand the society in
which we live?? This course is organized around the question of ?how can film and tv
be used to better understand the experience of students in college?? This course
focuses on media representations of college student life, linking these to sociological
concepts and methods. We will examine how college students (and to a lesser extent
graduate students and faculty) are portrayed in movies, documentary films, and in
television series. Key sociological concepts will be discussed and used to analyze how
major media portrays ?the college experience?, and what similarities and differences
there are between how research conceptualizes the college experience and what
Hollywood (etc.) portrays. It would be ideal (but not required) for students to have
taken at least one introduction to sociology course before taking this class.
For up-to-date information on current course offerings and details, please refer to the Pitzer class schedule on MyCampus2 Portal.
