Description: Survey of the social, political and cultural history of the Middle East and North Africa since 1500, examining the transition from the age of empires to the emergence of nation-building projects in the region. Subjects include state and society under early modern Islamic empires; Western colonialism and imperialism; the integration of the region into the world economy; and the emergence of the nation state system in the Middle East and North Africa. (Africa/African Diaspora, South Asia, and the Middle East)
