RLST 101B CM -Ramayana: Lit/Politics/Culture Institution: Claremont McKenna
Description: This course explores the classical epic Ramayana in a few of the literary, political and cultural contexts in which it has flourished for the past two millennia in South Asia and beyond. We will consider Ramayana as an epic religious narrative that takes many literary forms; as a cultural touchstone whose symbolism has been deployed in political arenas; and as a discourse that has been used to present and contest ideals–a way of talking about everything from gender and social hierarchies to ethical and spiritual dilemmas to love and family. No knowledge of South Asian languages required.
Prerequisite(s): Please check course schedule for requirements.
