PSYC 199 PZ -Seminar in Developmental Psychology

Institution: Pitzer

Description: The title of this seminar this year will be “Mating: Perspectives from Developmental, Genetic, and Evolutionary Psychology.” Students will read classic and current scientific literature as a means of examining various aspects of mating-including choosing a mate, sexual behavior, sexual orientation, etc.-in human beings and other species. Beginning with Darwin’s theory of sexual selection, the course will consider what Evolutionary Biologists and Psychologists have written about sexual behaviors and sex differences, and will continue with an exploration of recent discoveries in molecular biology that suggest that certain aspects of sexual behavior are genetically determined. All theories and findings will ultimately be considered in light of Developmental Systems Theory, which will provide a fresh perspective on this vital collection of behaviors.Intended primarily for juniors and seniors.

Prerequisite(s): PSYC 091 PZ and either PSYC 105 PZ or a course in biology; these can potentially be waived by obtaining instructor’s permission to enroll. Please also check the current course schedule for requirements.

Note(s): Satisfies: SEM, DEV
