Description: Description: This seminar course will investigate Asian American identity, culture, and communities through an exploration of Asian American foodways, particularly in relation to colonization, immigration, nationalism, and globalization. This course will examine the history and origins of iconic “Asian” food such as chop suey and fortune cookies, the relationship of Asian Americans to the labor of food production, and the use of food in Asian American literary and cultural productions. Students will research the history of an Asian restaurant or Asian food business for their final project. Participation in a restaurant field trip is required.
