ANTH 088 PZ - China: Gender, Cosmology and the State

How can we understand contemporary China?  In this class we will examine an array of topics from constructions of female pollution, kinship, marriage, folk religion and the canonization of state-approved deities to the experiences of the socialist transformation and reform era representations of modernity from soap operas and ethnic tourism to urban ghost towns and labor unrest.  These explorations seek to provide students with an understanding of Chinese beliefs and practices contextualized in state and global arenas from the 20th century to the present.  This class is a discussion-based seminar.  It should be of interest to students interested in culture, religion, gender and state discourse.
