SOC 075 PZ -American Settler ColonialismInstitution: Pitzer Description: Although completely denied by dominant national narratives, the United States is a settler colonial society. How does this affect all aspects of social life in the United States? This course will examine the impact of this ongoing settler colonial nature on a variety of aspects of American society, including; incarceration, militarism, gender, sexuality, national culture, education, citizenship, racial inequality, capitalism, political power, and social movements. Material will address historical and contemporary dynamics. A sub-theme of the course will be identifying the experiences of and resistance by the Indigenous nations of North America in response to processes of colonization and settlement.
